Originally called the 62nd Regiment of Royal Americans this regiment was intended to actually be formed from recruited colonists, in the event the regiment was filled out with rejects from other British regiments based in Ireland (mainly Scots and Ulstermen). Despite it's inauspicious start this body of men went on to produce a remarkably successful regiment that went on to achieve renown in the British Army.

From Braddock's defeat and the fall of Louisburg to the fateful battle at the Plains of Abraham battalions from this unit were present for all of the major events of the war in North America.

This regiment was blessed by some of the very best British commanders in America who had the foresight to encourage the training of light infantry techniques that made it better adapted to fighting in this especially difficult terrain.
