In the struggle
for control of North America between Britain and France during the 18th
century, civilian settlers often found themselves on the front line of
this, at times, savage war. For those settlers caught up in the
conflict, the transition from peaceful homesteading to a desperate
battle for survival against marauding enemy patrols could take place in
moments. Other civilians accompanied the army on campaign, providing
much of the logistical support that allowed it to function more
effectively. Within NFOE we try to display these diverse aspects of
civilian life.
During events we demonstrate the life and times of the 18th Century.
Many of our members have acquired knowledge in the skills of this
period, including culinary expertise, candle making, the use of herbs
and berries in medicines to cure the many aliments of the time. Other
impressions include woodwork, shoemaking, scrimshaw, needlework, leather
working, calligraphy and tent making; all these skills add depth to the
period ‘feel’ of our encampments.
We also have many objects representative of the period on display as
part of our living history impression and are always delighted to
demonstrate and discuss their use.
Yet we do not forget the struggle these civilians faced as they often
bore the brunt of merciless enemy attacks. On occasions therefore, where
the scenario allows, civilians are included in our skirmish displays
(but always voluntarily!)
