Never to be confused with Coureur Des Bois or even any of the opposing
Anglo/American Militia, the Milice stand poles apart in light infantry
woodland fighting and survival while still being under military command
and discipline. Their closest comparison are the Voyageurs and similar
to them they were utilised a lot to fulfil much of the French forces
logistical needs.
Milice like many irregular light troops weren't prone to stand around
when things looked dangerous but then they were never relied on as
second rate line troops like other Militias, the true strength of this
unique troop type was their vast range and travelling speeds, they made
more than a foil for the British Rangers.
The men that
made up the Milice were the hardiest of woodsmen who were use to not
being tied down in one place, visiting a town or village would have been
a rare experience unless it was for trade, this meant that it was no
hardship for them to roam over huge distances to strike the enemy.
