The British Ranger companies were initially formed to counteract the frequent Indian raids on outer settlements. Though recruited like local militia it's men were chosen from only the hardiest and most experienced woodsmen like hunters, traders and trappers, as proof of their highly skilled and highly prized abilities these men though not regulars were actually the best paid troops in the British Army.

Working closely alongside their Iroquoian allies especially the Mohawks they soon developed and adopted many of their techniques and much of their equipment. So closely did these units work with the Indians that they eventually recruited many into their own ranks.

It is difficult to talk about the rangers without mentioning the most famous ranger company of them all, Roger's Ranger but it must be remembered that many Ranger companies were formed and were to prove invaluable to the success and development of the British Army in North America.

It was sometimes difficult to tell the difference between rangers and Mohawks.
